Abstract/Summary
A trial trench evaluation was carried out on land off Flatts Lane, Calverton, Nottinghamshire in advance of the proposed development of the site for new housing.
There are two Roman camps, which is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, to the north of the site.
The site comprised an open landscape given over to areas laid to managed pasture, used as paddocks. There is one building on the site, the residential dwelling of Long Acre Lodge, off Flatts Lane - this dwelling comprises a detached residence with gardens and an access drive.
Most of the trenches were negative containing sandy loam upper soils over a gravely mixed sand sub-stratum, with some trenches containing animal burrows and land drains.
Features were revealed in one trench. One trench contained a circular feature, possibly a pit, and a modern land drain. Based on its character, a broadly prehistoric date may be inferred for the pit. No other features were revealed during the evaluation.
