Abstract/Summary
A scheme of archaeological evaluation trenching was undertaken on land at the junction of Newark Road and Coxmoor Road, on the periphery of Sutton in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.
The site is currently agricultural land and includes a later post-medieval sand quarry, backfilled in the 20th century as landfill. Known archaeological monuments in the area are few, however the enigmatic Hamilton Hill lies to the north and there are cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures in the vicinity. This area would have been part of the managed medieval woodland of the Kings estates, with areas cleared for agriculture in the later medieval and early post-medieval periods. The sand pit and the linear striations of ridge and furrow were recorded in a geophysical survey of the site.
The evaluation revealed one probable furrow and an undated pit close to the southern edge of the former sand pit, and an undated ditch in the southeast of the site. The majority of the site is devoid of any buried remains.
