Abstract/Summary
This report describes the results of an archaeological evaluation carried out on land at Fernwood Meadows, Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire. Forty-six trenches, covering an area of 3% of the available land, were excavated during the evaluation. The aim of the work was to identify and record any archaeological remains within the proposed development area and to investigate anomalies detected on the geophysical survey.
The site lies in an area of known settlement remains dating to the Iron Age and Roman periods. An evaluation immediately to the south of the site in 2015 uncovered remnants of five roundhouses and associated boundary ditches of Middle Iron Age date, as well as Roman settlement remains c. 500m to the south. Evidence for a further Middle Iron Age settlement and scattered Roman finds was found during an excavation c. 1km to the north. Geophysical survey undertaken on the site in 2017 detected anomalies indicating possible ring ditches, field systems and ridge and furrow remains.
During the evaluation, the remains of several ditches and pits of Middle Iron Age date and remnants of a possible Iron Age roundhouse were revealed in the central and western parts of the site. Several undated ditches and pits were also examined and recorded; these were found in the same area as the Iron Age features and possibly date to the same period. Furrows were present across the site, indicating agricultural usage of the land during the medieval or post-medieval periods. An area of modern disturbance, including building remains, was observed in the easternmost part of the site. Finds recovered during the evaluation included several residual worked flints, indicating prehistoric activity in the area; these included an unusual chopping tool of possible early prehistoric date.
Based on the results of the archaeological evaluation, it is likely that further archaeological works will be required to further characterise the possible ring gully in the centre of the site, and to look for potential features of similar date in the vicinity. Further investigation is required to confirm the diameter of the ring gully, to reveal any further associated features within it such as pits, and to uncover any features potentially indicative of a roundhouse, such as a south-eastern entrance. Given that the feature did not correspond to a geophysical anomaly, it would be beneficial to investigate the area surrounding the ring gully, should any further settlement remains be revealed
