Abstract/Summary
A scheme of evaluation trenchingwas carried out on land at 27 Woodhill Road, Collingham.
Collingham lies on the east bank of the River Trent, with settlement and farming being evidenced from at least the Roman period. The site lies on the periphery of the historic core of the village, on land enclosed for agriculture and grazing by the late 18th century. The first known occupation within the site boundary dates from the early 1940’s when a range of buildings to accommodate Land Army Girls working on the surrounding farmland was built here. The site was used as a school for a period in the later 20th century but has since been abandoned.
Demolition groundworks of existing buildings were monitored, and nine evaluation trenches excavated. No archaeology was encountered: trenches excavated in the northern part of the site exposed a sequence of topsoil, subsoil and natural geology, while a made ground was recorded in the area of the demolished buildings.
No buried remains have been identified at the site that could be affected by current development proposals.
