Abstract/Summary

An archaeological geophysical survey, using the magnetic method, was conducted to investigate the potential for buried archaeological remains prior to a proposed development at Warren Farm Stables, New Mill Lane, Forest Town, Mansfield, NG19 0HQ, Nottinghamshire. The planned survey area was 26.5ha, of which all was complete. Possible archaeological activity has been identified in the western part of the survey area, in the form of a possible former field division. Further linear anomalies and trends classified as having an ‘Unclear Origin’ have been detected within the survey area and an archaeological interpretation for these cannot be excluded. A possible field boundary has been detected in the western part of the survey area as well as ploughing trends running across the field. Drains have has been also detected in the northern part of the survey area. Natural variations have been identified within the southern and eastern part of the survey area and reflect a shifts between different types of superficial deposit. The impact of modern activity on the site is mostly limited to the perimeters and ferrous debris in the topsoil within the survey area.
