Abstract/Summary
Archaeological monitoring and recording was carried out during the ground works undertaken in advance of construction at the site of the former Queen’s Head public house, Mansfield.
The site lies c.200m south west of the market place and just off one of the main routed into Mansfield, not far from both the modern station and old Friends Meeting House in an area that saw rapid expansion during the industrial period.
During the medieval period this area probably lay just outside the core of the town being on higher ground to the west. Historic maps of Mansfield pre-dating the 1879 OS are not detailed enough to be of any use here, but this and subsequent mapping reveals major changes to the building.
As expected the site reveals exclusively post-medieval remains, with early wells and a sewer running north away from the site that is of potential significance.
