Description

Four trial trenches (01, 02 and 03 were all 5x5m, 04 was 6x2m) were dug to investigate geophysical anomalies. All trenches were excavated using a toothless ditching bucket on the back actor of a mechanical excavator. Topsoil was removed first and then the underlying soil removed in c. 0.1m spits to a level at which archaeological features could be recognised. In most cases this was also the level at which bedrock was revealed. Throughout the site, the features were truncated to the level of the limestone bedrock. (1) See E9055 for earthwork survey, E9056 for gepohysical survey.
