Description

A 20m long trench was dug at right angles to the Fosse Way within the grounds of RAF Newton. This was 3m wide for most of its lenth but narrowed to 1.75m at its SE end to avoid a tree. Following initial test pitting, the trench was excavated mechanically to the bottom of a possible colluvial deposit and the surface was then trowel cleaned and planned. (1) See E9121 for fieldwalking, E9122 for test pits, E9123 for trench 08, E9125 for watching brief on pipeline.
