Description
Visits would be made to carry out the watching brief to coincide with groundwork. At the E end of the site the topsoil was only 15- 20cm deep upon yellow gravel and generally this continued W to the boundary at the rear of Cotton Square. Occasional patches of ground disturbance were seen by most of these could have been caused by tree roots. The W end of the site was heavily disturbed by recent drains and cellars to a general depth of 2m. The civil war ditch seen behind Millgate house Hotel could have continued into this area but the modern disturbance had obliterated any trace of it. (1)
