Description

Visits would be made to carry out the watching brief to coincide with groundwork. At the E end of the site the topsoil was only 15- 20cm deep upon yellow gravel and generally this continued W to the boundary at the rear of Cotton Square. Occasional patches of ground disturbance were seen by most of these could have been caused by tree roots. The W end of the site was heavily disturbed by recent drains and cellars to a general depth of 2m. The civil war ditch seen behind Millgate house Hotel could have continued into this area but the modern disturbance had obliterated any trace of it. (1) See E9170 for nearby watching brief
