Description

Archaeological watching brief on development in the market place of offices, shops and flats covering c.480 sq m. The area was heavily disturbed by building foundations largely of C19 - C20 brick, cellars and services. Because of the unconsolidated ground it was necessary to sink the foundations to bedrock. The deposits were so mixed and loose that in places shuttering was required to support the trench sides, and most of the exposed sections were too unstable to permit adequate cleaning for archaeological recording.
