Description
The site is situated to the north of Sookholme Road (B6407), at the junction with Sookholme Lane. The western half of the Site comprises a range of farm outbuildings arranged around an open yard. In the centre of the Site is a Grade II listed farmhouse, which is L-shaped in plan, and has gardens to the south and west. This farmhouse has four levels including cellar and attic. To the north of the farmhouse is another yard with garages and agricultural buildings. The eastern part of the Site is an open raised area of land, adjacent to the local church.
The internal archaeological watching brief was carried out within the main farm building on the 12th January 2012 prior to the insertion of under-floor heating within the farmhouse. The external watching brief was carried out on the 13th-14th March 2012 prior to the insertion of a geothermal heating system on raised ground to the north-east of the farm building. The internal and external groundworks were carried out by the groundworks contractor using a combination of hand digging and a mini excavator.
No archaeological features were observed during the watching brief at Hall Farm. Within the farmhouse, the deposits observed beneath the floor were all associated with the construction of the house, comprising made ground mixed with re-deposited natural sands. The top of brick vaulted cellar rooms were observed towards the northeastern extent of the farmhouse. The small number of finds recovered were of domestic character: ceramics of 18th-19th century date, single fragments of undiagnostic clay pipe stem and modern ceramic building material, and animal bone, some of which was had
butchery marks. Retention of the finds for long-term curation is not recommended and the finds will be discarded.
The land to the north-east of the farmhouse contained no finds or archaeological features, and only natural deposits were observed below the topsoil and subsoil.
No evidence was found of any earlier structures or occupation relating to the post-medieval manor and Hall, which historic mapping suggests may have existed in this location.
