Abstract/Summary
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks within and in the vicinity of Hall Farm, Sookholme, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
The site comprises a range of farm buildings arranged around an open yard, with a Grade II listed farmhouse of 18th century date at the centre of the Site. Historic mapping suggests there was a manor and Hall at Sookholme from the 16th century. The archaeological watching brief was carried out during groundworks within the listed farmhouse, and on an open raised area of land at the eastern part of the site.
The groundworks within the building and those to the east of the site produced no archaeological features, with only a small number of finds of domestic character recovered from within the building: 18th-19th century pottery, single fragments of undiagnostic clay tobacco pipe stem and modern ceramic building material, and fragments of animal bone, some with butchery marks. No evidence was found of any earlier structures or occupation relating to the post-medieval manor and Hall, which historic mapping suggests may have existed in this location.
