Description

A scheme of historic building recording and streetscape survey was undertaken in advance of redevelopment groundworks associated with an environmental improvement scheme in the town centre of Hucknall in Nottinghamshire, the centrepiece of which is to be the construction of a new road through a former residential and light industrial area. The historic building recording included a level 2 photographic survey undertaken on properties at 22-26 Baker Street, and photographic recording of the character of Titchfield Street and Woolaton Street, and exterior recording of the properties to be demolished. Further photographic recording was undertaken in the area between Titchfield Street and Baker Street on standing remains thought to derive from a former mill or other industrial building. Whilst the buildings of 22-26 Baker Street were poorly preserved, having lost most of their primary fixtures and fittings, they largely retain their external massing and appearance. They have been built using quality materials to an exact design of some architectural merit, and as such present a typical example of a pair of commercial properties of their period. The buildings on Titchfield Street and Woolaton Street are good examples of Edwardian housing, typical of their types and location, representing workers housing of the early part of the 20th century. The standing remains between Titchfield Street and Woolaton Street appear to represent the remains of a flour mill and its boiler house and domestic stabling to the rear of 22 and 24 Baker Street, which can be seen on town plans of the late 19th century. Further standing remains are more recent: associated with the building demolished at 20 Baker Street or the boundary of the Edwardian properties on Titchfield Street although these do incorporate earlier stone walls of buildings not seen on any early town plans.
