Description

Observation of machine excavation of a 2.2m by 2.3m x 2.6m deep pit for a septic tank pit revealed fragments of disarticulated human bone along with 3 sherds of medieval pottery in the subsoil. Two sherds come from a large shell-tempered Potterhanworth jar of 13th century date (one rim and one body sherd). The other body-sherd came from a Light-bodied Nottingham Green-glazed ware jug of 13th century date. 3 inhumations were recorded in the sections of the pit. Two associated trenches were excavated into the graveyard soil and no graves were disturbed by these trenches.
