An archaeological watching brief during water main rehabilitationwork was undertaken on an existing pipe-line that, in part, runs alongside the A46, the line of the Roman Fosse Way. Of the twenty-seven excavations in total that were observed, four were within the eastern zone of the Scheduled Ancient Monument ofMargidunum, a known Roman settlement. The rehabilitation work was designed so as to excavate previously disturbed ground thereby limiting the impact of the excavations upon any stratified archaeological remains. The watching brief was carried out to monitor this and to record any archaeology exposed in the sides of the trenches where ground was newly disturbed. The majority of the trenches, being in already disturbed ground, failed to produce anything of significance. However, some trenches located both within and just outside the Scheduled Ancient Monument did produce a wide variety of Romano-British pottery from stratified layers. An examination of the pottery that was recovered by Ruth Leary has identified examples covering the entire span of Margidunum 's known occupation
