Description

The site lies on the northern side of Potter Street, close to the town centre of Worksop. The site is broadly rectangular and orientated north-north-west to south-south-east. The total area is around 600 square metres. The purpose of the watching brief was to ascertain whether archaeological deposits were present. The site was visited on 14th and 22nd October 2008 and ground-works associated with the construction of new apartments were observed. The ground-works were carried out by a small tracked excavator. The excavation of the new soakway and the trial pit revealed that the upper 0.8m-1m of the soil sequence at 65-67 Potter Street consisted entirely of re-deposited sand and soil with large amounts of demolition rubble. The buried origignal ground surface was at a depth of 0.9m and the natural red sandstone substratum was revealed at a depth of 1.5m. Under the made-up ground was a layer of dark grey clay-silt material and grey clay. The high silt content may indicated that the deposit had become waterlogged for some time in the past. No pre-modern features or finds were located during the wating brief.
