Description

The study area lies 5kms south-east of Newark-on-Trent, immediately south of Fernwood. The B6236, Great North Road, forms the western boundary, while Shire Dyke marks the eastern and southern limits. The study area measured c.50 ha. Technique: Magnetometry Instrument: Bartington Grad 601-2 Traverse Interval: 1m Sample Interval: 0.25m Several plough-damaged ring ditches and former ditch systems have been identified in the northern part of the survey area. A previously unrecorded extensive settlement complex has been identified in the centre of the survey area; the core extends over an area greater than nine hectares. Field systems and individual archaeological features extend beyond the main area of habitation. Ridge and furrow cultivation patterns have been identified in many of the fields. An area of alluvium associated with the Shire Dyke has been mapped.
