Abstract/Summary
A geophysical survey was undertaken near Fernwood, 5kms south-east of Newark-on-Trent. The study area was roughly c. 50 ha.
Two areas of archaeological interest were identified.
The magnetometry survey revealed ring ditches and former field systems which lie close to crop mark features documented on the HER. The survey identified an extensive settlement complex towards the centre of the survey area, this extends over an area greater than 9 hectares. Field systems and individual archaeological features extend beyond the main area of habitation.
In the northernmost part of the survey area a series of poorly defined linear, curvilinear and ring features which coincide with earthworks visible from aerial photography.
Strong magnetic anomalies were identified towards the centre of the site, it’s suggested that these are a result of human occupation, and could represent a core of intense settlement towards the cen-tre of the study area.
A second area of archaeological interest was identified, strong survey results suggest that burnt and rubbish deposits were present. The report states that this could be attributed to small scale industrial type activity in the form of oven, hearths and kilns. Ditches forming enclosure, small land plots, compounds and individual house plots were also identified, however many of these features have probably been cut into by later ridge and furrow farming. This lay within the 9ha core of the possible settlement.
The reason for the increased magnetic response could be partly due to limestone being more prevalent in this area but the nature of the archaeological features is likely to be contributing far more to the strength of the anomalies.
