Description

An augur survey was conducted in a surviving substantial earthwork feature at the northern end of the moat complex in Langford Medieval Village. Three augur transects were laid out across the earthwork: a longitudinal transect running down the center of the earthwork east to west, and two transverse transects across the eastern and western halves of the earthwork. Fourteen boreholes were sunk through the infilling sediments of the feature to the underlying natural sands. The auguring precisely defined the earthwork feature: 55m long, between 12 and 13m wide and up to 0.91m below ground surface. Due to its shallow depth and size, this was probably a fish pond. Very good survival of insects, seeds, pollen, fish bones, and other palaeo-environmental indicators.
