Abstract/Summary
In advance of a planning application to re-excavate part of the medieval water features at Langford for a water habitat, an augur survey was commissioned within this feature. The survey was required to establish the character and archaeological value of the deposits infilling the feature. The investigation concluded that this could not have been a moat due to its shallowness, and although not necessarily contemporary with the fishery documented in the Domesday Book, it is consistent with a fish pond. The survival of organic material in the sediment is very good, and insects, seeds, pollen, fish bones, and other paleo-environmental indicators are preserved. The report recommends the basal muds be sampled due to their archaeological potential.
