Full Description

A very impressive and extensive site consisting of a network of sunken roads, one of which goes down to the old bed of the River Trent to form the ford which gives the site its name. The house enclosures are rather confused compared with the excellent road system, but many different enclosures may be seen. The village migrated to its present position in the late C17 as a result of a quarrel over tithes between a Mr Philpott, who held the parsonage, and the Lord of The Manor. The Lord of The Manor depopulated the village so that the tithes were of no value to his opponent. (2)
The identifiable remains of this village cover a large area but form little coherent pattern and identification is rendered more difficult by later gravel digging. A broad, shallow gully, running E-W through the now pasture land and just S of the drive to Old Hall would appear to have been the main street of the village. There is much general amorphous evidence of building sites but no building material was seen. (3)
Large open ended rectangular markings extend from S of the site and large area of disturbance all over the village area. (5) (6) (7)
The S part of the site was lightly ploughed with no damage done but no pottery or signs of occupation revealed. (8) (9)
The earthworks of this shrunken village survive as surveyed in 1962 although some of the minor detail has been omitted on the published plan. (10)
Morph: 202.12.1 field system, 202.12.2 moat. (12)
