Description
Five trial trenches were excavated in order to assess the impact of development on a previously known Roman villa (see E145; Daniels 1959 excavations). Seven trenches were planned, but trench 1 was left unexcavated due to its proximity to Southwell Minster, and trench 6 was unexcavated due to the presence of buried services. In trenches 2 and 3, a large clay extraction pit was uncovered. Layers and features associated with the 1970s school was uncovered in trench 4, trench 5 contained buried services and redeposited ground, and in trench 7, evidence of two walls and an opus signinum floor associated with the Roman villa was uncovered. These features had already been excavated in Daniels 1959 excavations, but this trench elucidated the location of Daniels' trenches and also provided evidence for the phasing of the walls and floor of the bath's cold rooms. The GIS locations of the trenches in the HBSMR are approximate.
