Description

Excavation for the construction of a disabled access ramp uncovered a wall of two phases and a drain, both constructed in hand-made brick. The objectives of the work were to establish how far the drain went and its internal construction; to try to establish what the wall features was and what phases of the construction work; and try to date either feature. The drain is likely associated with the Orangery, which dates it to around 1725, though given that some of the drain appears to be constructed in stone, it is possible the drain dates from earlier. The technique of construction suggests that the wall is not later than Georgian in date, and it cannot be associated with any existing structure in particular.
