Description
The auger survey successfully demonstrated the nature of the underlying deposits in close
proximity to Rainworth Water. The sediments remain undated, but are unlikely in most
locations to represent accumulations much earlier than the post-medieval period although
this remains to be established.
The aims of the fieldwork were as follows: to prospect for waterlogged organic deposits at the sites identified; to visually assess the potential of any such deposits for the possibilities of further
work; and to understand site formation processes and the potential for deposits to preserve
palaeoenvironmental and archaeological remains.
Four sites were visited where seven transects undertaken using an Eikjelcampgouge hand auger.
The deposits recorded were recorded using the Troels-Smith (1955) system of sediment classification.
