Abstract/Summary
The hand auger survey successfully demonstrated the nature of the underlying deposits in close
proximity to Rainworth Water. The sites all follow the course of the Rainworth Water channel:
Harlow Wood, Inkersall Dam, Robin Dam and Cutt’s Wood. The sediments remain undated, but are unlikely in most locations to represent accumulations much earlier than the post-medieval period although this remains to be established. Recommendations have been made for the sites at which
further work maybe useful, as well as identifying sites where additional survey would be unlikely to reveal much of significant value. These include Inkersall and Robin Dam, although Inkersall dam is considered to have the greatest potential for the preservation of archaeological and palaeoenvironmental remains.
In addition to the augur survey observations were made relating to the dam structure at
Inkersall. This feature has previously been breached and has the potential for small scale
excavation to be carried out to establish the nature of the structure.
