Full Description

Pond bay - large pond named "Inkersall Dam". (1)
In the Hundred Rolls Rufford Abbey is charged with making a "stagnum" at "Wilkenfield"… Inkersall Dam, which may thus have been constructed in the third quarter of C13, is referred to in the Parliamentary Survey of 1656, but is now dry. It is visible as a bank across the valley of Rainworth Water about 1100yds W of the main road. It has a marginal bank along its N side which is probably the leet for the mill which is also referred to in the Parliamentary Survey. (2)
Waterfilled until c 1950 when attempted enlargement of pond burst the dam. Possibly monastic in origin. (3)
Already dry by 1899. (4)

Inkersall Dam was surveyed and subjected to a hand auger survey in March 2022
As part of the general walkover of the site the breach in the dam was inspected. This breach appeared to have been reinforced on the southern side of the channel by a sandstone wall. Deposits located to the north of the present and historical courses of Rainworth Water may be related to earlier courses. It may be possible that the more-recent historical course, recorded on late 19th century mapping, may be closer to the more ‘natural’ course of Rainworth Water. (5)
