The site is located approximately 600m north of the village of Gotham and approximately 1.7km southwest of the village of Clifton, within the administrative borough of Rushcliffe. The site comprises a 2.4ha area of agricultural land. The site is bounded by fields to the north, east and south, with Nottingham Road to the west. The trial-trenching programme consisted of the excavation of 6 50m x 1.8m trenches across the site. The archaeological evaluation trenching identified five archaeological features within the development area; three of which were located within a trench within the south end of the site and two were located within the northwest end of the site. A total of four ditches and a single pit were recorded. The archaeological features survived poorly below the peat/organic rich deposit, with the deepest feature being only 0.16m deep. No artefacts were recovered from any of the features and so they could not be attributed to a historical period. A total of 10 animal bones (horse and cattle) were recovered from a ditch. These are common within the archaeological assemblage for most periods and are not considered significant. The recording of potential tufa development on site is significant as it is associated with major landscape or climate change and has been recorded elsewhere in Nottinghamshire occurring during the Mesolithic and Roman periods. The archaeological features recorded during works suggest a low level activity of unknown date within the development site.
