Abstract/Summary

A programme of archaeological evaluation by trial trenching was undertaken on land east of Nottingham Road, Gotham, Nottinghamshire prior to determination of a planning application for an energy storage facility. Within the vicinity of the site, Neolithic to Bronze Age enclosures, pit alignments and a barrow cemetery have been recorded. Iron Age farming activity has also been identified within 250m of the site and a Romano-British nucleated enclosed settlement and Roman villa complex is known to be located at Glebe Farm. Further Romano-British evidence has been recorded 84m east of Glebe Farmhouse where a 3rd century tessellated pavement was identified. Six trenches, each measuring 50m long and 1.8m wide were excavated across the proposed development area. The trenches revealed a similar sequence of ploughsoil sealing a sequence of potential colluvial silts and sands, a peat/organic rich deposit interleaved with tufaceous material and clay natural. A small number of undated archaeological features were recorded, with a small assemblage of animal bone being retrieved from one of them. The remaining trenches were archaeologically sterile.
