Description

The Site is located within a 0.3ha sub-rectangular plot of land to the rear of 74 Cropwell Road, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire, NG12 2JG, approximately 8km east of Nottingham City Centre. The house is bounded by a series of large detached houses set in substantial sized gardens along the east and west, a golf course to the north, and open agricultural fields to the south. Two phases of archaeological monitoring were carried out: 1) During all intrusive groundworks associated with the placement of a new eco heating system. This comprised the excavation of a series of parallel service trenches within the rear gardens, to a maximum depth of around c 1m B.G.L. 2) During ground reduction works after the demolition of the existing house, to a maximum depth of 2.40m B.G.L During the ground reduction monitoring the top brick support for a well, measured on site at 24m deep before backfilling, was revealed. This feature could be contemporary with the windmill depicted on the Sanderson’s map of 1835 and an earthwork on First Edition OS mapping. No finds, features or deposits relating to the presence of a former windmill were identified within the monitored area of the Site. It is possible that these remains, if present, lay further to the east within the upper terrace, which was not impacted as a result of these groundworks.
