Full Description
Following the demolition of the existing house, ground reduction was needed prior to the construction work of the new property. This was on the western side of the site where different levels existed relating to the cellar of the old building.
Excavations went down to a depth of 2.40m BGL and revealed the top brick support for well.
The well, which was measured by the on-site construction team as being at least 24m deep and 1.45m in diameter, was backfilled due to safety concerns. It was constructed from unfrogged handmade curved bricks measuring 0.22 x 0.10 x 0.08m which were unbonded and was cut into the natural geological substrate.
Only the eastern half of the brick well survived, the other half is assumed to have been removed when the previous house was built in the second half of the 19th century.
This feature could be contemporary with the windmill depicted on the Sanderson’s map of 1835 and an earthwork on First Edition OS mapping.
