Abstract/Summary
Archaeological monitoring was conducted during groundworks at 74 Cropwell Road, Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire. The existing house is set to be demolished, and a new dwelling with associated ancillary buildings erected in its place.
Archaeological monitoring was carried out during all intrusive groundworks associated with the placement of a new eco heating system. This comprised the excavation of a series of parallel service trenches within the rear gardens, to a maximum depth of around c 1m Below Ground Level.
After demolition of the existing house a programme of ground reduction works was needed prior to the construction of the new dwelling, this was to a depth of 2.40m BGL.
Monitoring the ground reduction works revealed a brick-built well. No finds, features or deposits relating to the presence of a former windmill were identified within the monitored area of the site. It is possible that these remains, if present, lay further to the east within the upper terrace, which was not impacted as a result of these groundworks.
