Description

The site of the proposed development is located to the south-west of the village of Bilsthorpe, Nottinghamshire, within a roughly 7.5ha parcel of land off Oldbridge way. It is bounded to the north and east by modern residential development, local amenities, parks and roadways, and to the west and south by cultivated land and dispersed commercial and residential buildings. A total of of 26 trenches measuring 40m x 2m in size were excavated across the site according to locations specified within the proposed trench plan. The rationale for the trench placement was informed by the geophysical survey and HER data. The location of each trench was devised with the aim of targeting geophysical anomalies that were thought to correlate to sub-surface archaeological features, or to assess any apparent blank areas. Only two archaeological features were discovered in the course of the trial trench evaluation. Both of these features were contained within a relatively restricted area towards the north-western part of the site. These features comprised north-east to south-west aligned ditches. Based on their similar alignments and proximity, these features may have been parts of the same ditch. No dating evidence was recovered from the ditch, however map regression has shown that the feature was likely to be a field boundary visible on the first edition OS map of 1884 and so was likely to be late Medieval to Post Medieval in date. There was little correspondence between the anomalies identified within the geophysical survey results and the presence of archaeological features. The only instances where the two corresponded were in one trench, where a ditch was found, as well as modern features/deposits in two additional trenches. In most cases, where no geophysical anomalies were identified no archaeological features were present, with the notable exception of continuation of the field boundary ditch into a trench.
