The survey area is located immediately to the north east of Cotgrave. The north of the site lies at approximately 40m above Ordnance Datum (aOD) elevated to the south where it reaches a height of 46m aOD. The proposed area is approximately 4.4 hectares consisting of a single field. The survey area is bounded to the north by Hollygate Lane, to the west by a small field of overgrown grassland, Colston Gate and the village of Auckley to the south, and to the east by agricultural fields. The site grid was laid out using a Trimble VRS differential Global Positioning System (Trimble R6 model). The survey was undertaken using Bartington Grad601 magnetic gradiometers. These were employed taking readings at 0.25m intervals on zig-zag traverses 1.0m apart within 30m by 30m grids, so that 3600 readings were recorded in each grid. These readings were stored in the memory of the instrument and later downloaded to computer for processing and interpretation. ProcessIT software was used to process and present the data. The magnetic survey has been able to identify a single linear response which represents a modern, existing bridleway. Modern field drains and potential ridge and furrow have also been identified on a similar alignment to the south. Small discrete clusters of archaeological responses have been detected to the north of the site. These anomalies possibly represent either pit like features or in filled ditches, however the nature of these features is unclear. The majority of the responses are modern, likely to be associated with recent agricultural occupation of the site.
