Description

The site is located within the main built-up area of the settlement, on the south-east side of the junction of Norwell Road, Mill Lane and Main Street. It is approximately 0.1ha in area, and comprises part of the existing residential curtilage of ‘The Slips’. The existing buildings of ‘The Slips’, which was formerly a farmstead but is now a dwelling, occupy the east side of the plot; the west side, which is currently under rough grass and partially occupied by dog kennels, is to be developed. The plot is surrounded by high hedges, and bordered by Norwell Road to the north and Main Street to the west. To the south is the medieval parish church of St. Andrew. Archaeological monitoring and recording took place intermittently (5 visits) between 10th January – 4th November 2019, during the excavation of the new house footings and drains for the new property. This was undertaken using a tracked JCB excavator fitted with a toothless bucket, or a smaller 6 tonne compact excavator, also fitted with a smooth bladed bucket. A single large pit containing 13th – 15th century pottery was recorded during the monitoring; evidence that while this area lay close to domestic occupation, the focus of this was probably to the south, closer to the church and core of the village, or possibly to the east, based on evidence deriving from historic OS mapping.
