Full Description

The only archaeological feature observed during this scheme was a large (probable) pit, seen in the north facing section of the southernmost drainage pit and cut into alluvium. The drainage pit measured 1.40m wide with the pit only observed in the southern section, and 2.30m across with the pit exceeding the width of the drainage pit. The drainage pit was more than 2m deep with unstable sides, preventing access to clean the section. The lower fill was a very darksilty clay with possible peat at the very base, while the upper fill was a dark brown silty clay. A small body of artefacts, including animal bone and medieval pottery, were recovered from this feature (the artefacts were recovered from the machine bucket during excavation, therefore have been allocated to the upper fill). The animal bone is identified as sheep/goat and cow, with no evidence of butchery or other pathology. The pottery is two sherds of Potterhamworth type, deriving from a bowl and a jar dating from the 13th – 15th century. The pit was covered by 0.78m of alluvium / subsoil and topsoil.
