Description

The site is located west of Huthwaite, on the Nottinghamshire – Derbyshire border. Huthwaite Lane forms the northern boundary of the site, with an industrial estate to the east and open agricultural land to the west. The survey area is approximately 13 hectares of grassland, sloping downwards in an easterly direction. Electricity pylons along the western boundary of the site are the only obstructions. The magnetic survey was carried out using a dual sensor Grad601-2 Magnetic Gradiometer manufactured by Bartington Instruments Ltd. Readings were taken at 0.25m centres along traverses 1m apart. This equates to 3600 sampling points in a full 30m x 30m grid. The survey at Huthwaite Lane has not identified any features of probable archaeological origin, supporting information from the desk-based assessment of the site having a limited potential for buried archaeological remains. A number of linear anomalies of possible archaeological origin have been identified, though these may also be agricultural in origin. Evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation, modern ploughing and former field boundaries indicate that the site has been largely used for agricultural purposes since the medieval period. The remaining features are natural or modern in origin and include a footpath, an area of made ground associated with the dismantled railway, areas of scattered magnetic debris, magnetic disturbance from nearby ferrous metal objects, and magnetic spikes that are likely to be modern rubbish.
