Description

The site is located in the historic core of Worksop, in Bassetlaw District. The site covers an area of 0.9ha. The site is bordered to the north by the Canch, and to the west by domestic buildings fronting Market Street and Watson Road. To the south, the site is bordered by Memorial Avenue, and to the east by a park containing the Central Library and Museum. The site was in use as a car park prior to the development, and is excluded from Worksop Conservation Area. The archaeological mitigation comprised monitoring of groundworks including preparation for the insertion of waste-water tanks and associated drainage, the reduction of ground levels prior to the construction of an access road and buildings, and the excavation of a service trench beneath the access road. The base of a narrow stone wall was located within the service trench underlying the access road. The date of the feature was unclear, although it may relate to a post-medieval field boundary. A disused manhole was identified roughly in the centre of the footprint of the new building. No other archaeological features were identified, and no artefacts were recovered during the watching brief.
