Full Description

The excavation of the service trench revealed the reasonably well-preserved remains of a structure.

The structure, interpreted as a wall, was located 6.7m east-northeast of the car park pay-machine, and around 7m north of a lamppost to the east of the junction with Memorial Avenue. The feature was measured from fixed points in the absence of any other survey data. The wall was built from irregularly sized and shaped sandstone blocks and was bonded with an extremely friable white-lime mortar. The wall had an appearance similar to that of a dry-stone wall, with stones placed seemingly at
random, yet was mortared. No construction cut was visible for this structure. The wall was surrounded by and overlain by a very dark brown silt deposit, which was in contrast to the orange-pale brown sand-silt deposit which was present below the made ground across site. It is possible that this wall was part of a foundation; hence the poorer quality of the stonework when compared with a structure intended to be viewed above ground. The wall was located at a depth of around 0.8m below the current car park surface and had a width of 0.6m.

Only a short stretch of the wall was exposed in the service trench, c.0.50m in length. The base of the wall was not excavated, as the service trench would not cause any
further damage to the structure. From the visible remains, it was not possible to establish the function or date of the wall. It is possible that it represented the boundary between the priory to the east and the town to the west, although it could also be a post-medieval field boundary. The presence of mortar would suggest that the wall was a foundation for a structure rather than a field boundary wall, but no return wall was noted in the service trench, as would be expected with a building.
