Description

The site is located in the village of Sturton le Steeple, which is situated 2.5 miles (4km) west of Littleborough and the River Trent that forms the county boundary with Lincolnshire and is 6 miles (9.6 km) east of Retford and is located in the north-east of the county of Nottinghamshire. The earth resistance survey was undertaken in 6 fields covering a total area of c.0.7ha in extent. The resistivity survey was carried out using a Geoscan RM15 Resistance Meter with a twin probe array configuration in mobile probe spacing of 0.5m. The zigzag traverse method of survey was used, with 1m wide traverses across a 20m x 20m grid. The geophysical survey has not produced any significant results relating to the projected alignment of the Roman road or any settlement that straddles it. It remains inconclusive but it is likely that the techniques applied did not respond well to the underlying geology in the areas surveyed. However, the recent survey has revealed the remains of an unknown moated site and further possible Roman settlement remains adjacent to the existent road immediately to the north of Fenton Gorse. Other anomalies recorded included former cottages, field boundaries and ceramic land drains.
