Abstract/Summary
Gradiometer and earth resistance surveys were carried out on land at Sturton Le Steeple, Nottinghamshire between September and November 2017. The purpose of the survey was to locate the Roman Road from Littleborough (Segelocum) to Doncaster, which had been previously investigated in 2012.
Eight fields were surveyed. Little evidence of the Roman road was detected by both techniques.
The geophysical survey has not produced any significant results relating to the projected alignment of the Roman road or any settlement that straddles it. It remains inconclusive but it is likely that the techniques applied did not respond well to the underlying geology in the areas surveyed.
However, the recent survey has revealed the remains of an unknown moated site and further possible Roman settlement remains adjacent to the existent road immediately to the north of Fenton Gorse. Other anomalies recorded included former cottages, field boundaries and ceramic land drains.
