Description
The school is sited towards the west end of the village, a short distance to the south of the church at the junction of Main Street and the winding Church Lane.
Initial site works of stripping the modern tarmac from the development area were monitored, and these were completed using a mini digger fitted with a c. 1m wide bucket. The area of the development was then reduced by up to 2.20m, and levelled.
The medieval pottery within a layer at the north-west corner of the site shows evidence of domestic use and reflects some form of occupation in the vicinity of the site. The presence of this beneath the cobbled surface potentially dates this surface to the later medieval period. No other evidence of medieval occupation was revealed during the works.
The cobbled surface and wall foundations found on the east side of the site are thought to relate to the now demolished toilet block, dating from the mid 19th century. The foundations of a modern extension to the school, and modern service trenches were also recorded.
