Full Description

In the northeast corner of the site a single layer of rounded cobbles, of sizes up to 0.20m, formed a possible surface measuring a little over 1.50m in width. The cobbles were bedded into a relatively thick layer of grey-brown silty clay, which was very similar to the redeposited till which overlay the cobbles. A small corpus of pottery was recovered from layer. This was submitted for specialist appraisal and identified as Coal Measures Whiteware, in use between the mid 13th – mid 16th century. This layer was interpreted as redeposited till.

The medieval pottery within a layer at the north-west corner of the site shows evidence of domestic use and reflects some form of occupation in the vicinity of the site. The presence of this beneath the cobbled surface potentially dates this surface to the later medieval period.
