Description

All Saints Church is located on the western edge of the village of Harworth. The floor surface of the tower base was pulled up and the ground beneath excavated by hand to a depth of approximately 0.50m before a hole was punched through the exposed northern foundation to accommodate a drainage pipe. The sides of the excavated area were cleaned and rendered vertical. Works were undertaken inside and on the base of the tower and revealed a sequence of medieval and undated deposits. Medieval deposits were represented by the foundations for the nave and tower. Excavation revealed a stratigraphic relationship between these deposits which showed the tower foundation to post-date that of the nave. The excavation also revealed two make up deposits, one of which contained human remains and was stratigraphically later than the medieval foundations. The other contained sandstone and mortar rubble and is likely associated with the 19th century repairs and rebuilding of the church.
