Full Description

Works were undertaken inside and on the base of the tower and revealed a sequence of medieval and undated deposits. Medieval deposits were represented by the foundations for the nave and tower. Excavation revealed a stratigraphic relationship between these deposits which showed the tower foundation to post-date that of the nave.

The earliest deposit identified during the watching brief was the north-south running foundation wall. This comprised roughly hewn sandstone blocks approximately 0.18m x 0.15m x 0.10m thick and irregularly coursed. The foundation appeared not to be bonded by mortar and was exposed to a depth of 0.55m.

Abutting the foundation wall lay the tower base footing which consisted of irregularly coursed roughly hewn sandstone blocks averaging 0.24m x 0.18m x 70mm thick with no mortar bond. This foundation extended around the tower base as a single wall structure of which 0.13m width could be seen protruding from the tower wall itself.

This stratigraphic relationship is demonstrated by the tower foundation abutting that of the nave, as well as the nave foundation running across the entrance to the tower, suggesting the tower was built onto the nave. This correlates with the addition of the 14th or 15th century tower to the Norman 10th to 12th century body of the church.
