Description
Survey was undertaken in the larger c. 22 ha field. The field gently sloped from the southwestern edge to the northeastern edge. The field was bound to the west by the A1, to the east by Blyth Road, and to the north was a quarry. The smaller field in the northeast corner of site was subdivided and contained metal objects which prohibited survey.
The geophysical survey comprised hand pulled, cart-mounted fluxgate gradiometer survey.
Method: Magnetic
Instrument: Bartington Instruments Grad-13 Digital Three-Axis Gradiometer
Traverse Interval: 1m
Sample Interval: 200 Hz reprojected to 0.125 m
Archaeological activity has been detected in the form of ring ditches. The form and location of these anomalies correlate with the recorded Bronze Age barrow cemetery.
Agricultural activity has been detected in the form of modern and historic ploughing. A number of long linear anomalies likely to be former field boundary have also been detected.
A spread of ferrous anomalies at the northwestern edge of the survey area may also obscure any weaker archaeological responses.
