Full Description

Archaeological activity has been detected in the form of ring ditches. The form and location of these anomalies correlate with the recorded Bronze Age barrow cemetery.

The two archaeology probable anomalies exhibit clear and coherent forms of ring ditch features. The form and location of these anomalies correlate with the recorded Bronze Age barrow cemetery. The first of these forms a complete ring and is the most explicit within the data. The eastern ring ditch is situated in an area of more complex geology and has a less overt shape than the first ring ditch. The second ring ditch does not have a complete circular form, although it is possible this has been truncated by farming, as evidenced by an adjacent linear anomaly, or is simply obscured by the more complex background geology encountered in this area. Due to complex geology and soils responses across the survey area, it is difficult to confirm whether there are any internal pits within both ring ditches.

Between the two probable ring ditches lie two further possible ring ditch anomalies. Their magnetic strength of the response is far weaker, perhaps due to their smaller size, however this weaker response combined with the raised magnitude of the background responses makes it difficult to confidently interpret these as ring-ditches; hence the possible confidence level.

An additional possible ring ditch has been detected in the northwestern corner of the survey area. This anomaly lies within an area of strong, complex, background soil response, thought to be resultant of green waste; therefore, the magnitude and form of the geophysical response isless coherent than the two probable ring ditches. It was detected in the initial survey in May, however when the area was resurveyed as part of the September programme of works the feature was less clear.
