Description
A trench aligned for east to west was cut with a mechanical excavator, to the east of the sharp break of slope at the foot of the embankment. The trench was 1.5m wide, dug to a depth of around 1m and extending 8m eastwards from the embankment, excavated in two episodes in November 2015 and February 2016.
It was observed that the ochreous layer in the trench at one section was gently inclined downwards towards the east. This layer is thought to represent the floor of the standing water in the pond. The greyer silts below that level may represent the sediment which accumulated on the pond floor. Alternatively the ochreous layer may have been created as an iron-pan by the translocation of iron minerals downwards by leaching through the sandy soil, in the period since the mills closed.
It seems likely that the orange sandy material overlying the silt is debris from the embankment that has been transported across the site by mass-movement processes in the period since the pond was drained.
The sand and gravel at the base of the trench is thought to be the exposure of the Leen Sand and Gravel beds.
The sediment layer was gently inclined towards the east. The sediment layer was generally 2m higher above datum than the corresponding layer in the trench of the July 2014 excavation. This suggests that the pond was deepest in the centre and shallowed considerably towards this point. There was no evidence of a channel transporting water to the south or southwest.
This further reinforces the theory that this pond was the flooded site of a borrow-pit, rather than a reservoir.
