Full Description

The gentle sloping base of the pond was uncovered at an approximate maximum depth of 67.39m OD at the north east corner of the excavation area, however the pond could be deeper towards the centre of the field where no excavations took place. (1)

The slope of the base of the pond seemed to be consistent with the bank of the leat to the west of the excavation, which suggests that the pond was excavated so that the material could be used to build up the embankment. This would confirm the pond to have been a borrow pit rather than a larger constructed millpond. This could therefore be an indication that the two features are contemporary with each other. (1)

Grange Cottage pond woud have still been a visible feature into the mid 19th century and could potentially still have been retaining water. It is unclear as to whether the pond had already silted up prioer to a large hole being dug to deposit refuse, or whether the material was dumped into the existing depression of the pond. (1)

The dateable evidence from these ash and clinker deposits suggest that refuse was no long dumped on the pond site after the mid 20th century. (1)

The sand and gravel at the base of the trench is thought to be the exposure of the Leen Sand and Gravel beds. (3)

The sediment layer was gently inclined towards the east. The sediment layer was generally 2m higher above datum than the corresponding layer in the trench of a 2014 excavation (SNT5713). This suggests that the pond was deepest in the centre and shallowed considerably towards this point. There was no evidence of a channel transporting water to the south or southwest. (3)

This further reinforces the theory that this pond was the flooded site of a borrow-pit, rather than a reservoir. (3)
