Description
The site is located on the south side of Moor Lane, 80m east of St Lawrence’s Church and 20m east of The Manor.
The site was viewed by eye and a number of photographs were taken.
The entire surface of the spoil heap was examined very thoroughly and carefully to check for the presence of artefacts.
Though artefacts were recovered from the spoil heap they were few in number, were weathering out of it and were only located after a very thorough search. The author saw no evidence to suggest that finds were being wilfully or accidentally missed by the watching brief and indeed, in the author’s experience, it was somewhat surprising that so few artefacts were present in the spoil.
The finds collected by the local resident from the spoil heap were of a generally recent date and uninformative type. Collection and processing of such out of context modern material would reveal virtually nothing about the site and would be very difficult to justify in the world of commercial archaeology, where resources would be better deployed towards stratified artefacts which have a fair chance of yielding useful information.
