Full Description

Several artefacts were recovered during the site visit. They are detailed below.

1: Rim sherd of bowl, Coal Measures White ware (CMW). Original diameter c.40cm, 3-4% of rim remaining. Sherd mass 40g. Oxidised cream fabric with slightly reduced core where thickest, orange internal surface and buff exterior surface. Accidental dribble and splashes of clear / slightly yellow lead suspension glaze on inside of rim, possibly a dribble from the lip of the vessel pouring the glaze as it was moved from this pot to the next? Moderately abraded. 15th – 16th century.

2: Body / neck sherd of jug. Mass 9.4g. Possibly a Bourne type fabric, but identification uncertain. Oxidised fine fabric with sparse rounded pink and clear quartz 0.2 – 0.6mm, rare sub-rounded white ?calcareous inclusions c.1.5mm, rare / sparse sub angular ?flint / ?chert 0.25 – 2mm, rare rounded (sometimes elongated) red Fe up to 4mm and very rare sub angular fragments of unidentified rock to 2.2mm. Fresh, unabraded condition. Mid 15th – 16th century.

3: Worked flint flake. Secondary flake, hard hammer struck, in translucent grey / black flint with smooth water worn cortex along one margin. The raw material is of a type seen commonly in the Trent Valley, where it occurs in the form of small cobbles amongst the gravels. Flake 20mm x 22mm. Platform absent due to frost fracture roughly parallel to the platform which caused the flake to shatter, probably during knapping. Uncorticated. The general character of the flake and technology utilised suggest a later prehistoric date is most likely.

4: Base, jar or bowl. Brown Glazed Earthenware (BERTH). Mass 5.4g. Fine orange fabric, internal smooth brown glaze. 18th – 19th century.

5: Body, bowl or jar. Black glazed earthenware (BL). Mass 4.4g. Fine orange fabric, internal shiny black glaze with metallic streaks. 18th – 19th century.

6: Clay pipe, bowl and part of stem. ‘Miniature pipe’, oxidised terracotta coloured fabric, moulded acorn style bowl with floral decoration. Stem slightly oval, diameter 6 – 8mm, bowl 17mm diameter, 27mm rim to base. Circa 1910 – 1930. More likely used as child’s toy pipe than as a tobacco pipe for smoking.
